Pieter van Laer

Pieter van Laer Bodding, or Pietro Vuandher (* 1592-1599 in Laaren at Haarlem; ibid † 1642) was a Dutch painter. Il Bamboccio was the nickname.

Life

Laer could possibly have been a pupil of Esaias van de Velde. After a study tour of France, he went with his brother Roelant to Italy and settled in Rome. It is assumed that Van Lear 1625/26 was the diversity of the soldier theme, so the military genre, familiar even before his departure to Rome. Thematically van Lear remained true to its origins; but his style soon shows the influence of new artistic environment. The popularity of his works is based mainly in his witty and ironic game with the heroic- antikisierenden Bildgut.

In Rome he made the acquaintance of one hand the painter Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin and Joachim von Sandrart. On the other hand, reasoned Laer but also the style of Bambocciade, named after his appearance ( " Bamboccio " = rag doll ). Colleagues such as Michelangelo Cerquozzi, Viviano Codazzi or Michiel Sweerts could be enthusiastic about this part very rough scenes from the life of the people.

After 16 years' residence in Italy he returned in 1639 to Haarlem back. There, he died 1642.

In addition to his oil paintings, which are attributed to the style of Bambocciade almost completely, about 20 etchings are also known. In these, the subjects can also be found in rural scenes, but with a focus on animals.
