Place de la Bastille
The Place de la Bastille is located between the 4th, 11th and 12th arrondissement of Paris and is a major urban hub.
History
Located on the site of the Place de la Bastille fortified royal residence was demolished Bastille as a symbol of the Ancien Régime of 500 workers under the direction of Pierre -François Contractors Palloy after their storming between 16 July 1789 and October 4, 1790 and subsequently sold in blocks of stone. A royal decree of July 6, 1831 ordered the establishment of the July Column ( Colonne de Juillet ) in memory of the " three glorious days " between 27 and 29 July 1830, the July Revolution. On it was a gold-plated 1833 by Augustin -Alexandre Dumont 5.85 m high figure, the balancing on one leg " Genius of Liberty" (Le Génie de la Liberté ), erected in memory of the street battles of the July Revolution of 1830. Location and meaning
The 215 m long and 150 m wide, Place de la Bastille is a traffic- important place in Paris. In the place of the Rue Saint -Antoine lead ( the extension of the Rue de Rivoli ), the Boulevard Richard Lenoir, Rue du Faubourg Saint -Antoine, Rue de Lyon, the Boulevard Bourdon and Boulevard Henri IV On the square is the Opéra Bastille by Carlos Ott. Under the square is a square named after the station of the metro station Bastille is ( metro line 5). The platform of the metro station contains remains of contrescarpe, the outer wall of the moat. Under the metro station of 2 km underground in a tunnel running under the Boulevard Richard Lenoir Canal Saint -Martin, which starts at the Port de l' Arsenal is. This serves as a marina for 200 boats that can reach the Seine via a lock.
The Place de la Bastille is a popular spot for tourists and locals. Regular concerts and similar events take place there. The place is because of its convenient location, often referred to as starting materials, intermediates or end point for demonstrations. Every Sunday afternoon is the place, if the weather permits, the starting point for a 20 km long safe route through the streets of Paris for inline skaters. The event is free for everyone and is organized by the association Rollers et Coquillages.
The area northeast of the square has a lively nightlife with many cafes, bars, night clubs and concert halls. In the east, the Rue du Faubourg Saint -Antoine is the main axis of the former suburb of Saint -Antoine.
