The 4th arrondissement, the Arrondissement de l' Hôtel de Ville, one of the oldest parts of the city. Its southern boundary is the north bank of the Seine in the city center. The history of the arrondissement ( district) has its origins in the early settlements on the Seine islands, and further in the expansion of the city in the 16th century.

Geographical location

The 4th arrondissement is located directly on the right bank. It is bordered to the west by the 1st arrondissement, on the north by the 3rd arrondissement and on the east by the 11th and 12th arrondissements. On the opposite side of his lies the 5th arrondissement. The eastern part of the Ile de la Cité and Ile Saint -Louis also belong to the 4th arrondissement.

The 4th arrondissement consists of the following four districts:

  • Quartier Saint -Gervais
  • Quartier de l' Arsenal
  • Quartier Notre Dame

According to the official census of the district of Paris is thereby accomodation 13 to 16

A part of the fourth ( and 3 ) is also known as district Marais.

Demographics

According to the census of 1999 30.680 inhabitants in the 160 -acre district are reported. This corresponds to a population density of 19 172 inhabitants / km ² and 2 % of the population of Paris.

The population remains stable since 1982, after a major population decline in 1962, compared to the other arrondissements of the city center.

Railway stations and metro lines

The metro lines 1 and 7 pass through the 4th arrondissement from east to west, the line 4 uses the Ile de la Cité in the southwest of the arrondissement. Furthermore, the interchange stations Châtelet and Bastille are on the edge of the arrondissement.

The RER has no railway station in the 4th arrondissement, however, is the railway station Châtelet - Les Halles, which is operated by the lines A, B, and D, immediately to the west and also has outputs for the 4th arrondissement.
