Place Stanislas

Place Stanislas is a classical architectural ensemble heart of Nancy, in Lorraine / France. This space together with the adjoining Place de la Carrière and Place d' Alliance in 1983 was included in the list of world cultural heritage by UNESCO.

History

The place was one of the major urban renewal project in the Nancy of the 18th century; the idea for it came from Stanislaw Leszczynski ( Stanislas in French ), Duke of Lorraine and former king of Poland to the New Town ( Ville neuve ) from the 16th century to connect the medieval town ( vieille ville) from the 10th century, . The square was named in honor of Louis XV. Place Royale baptized, who was Stanislas son and he owes the Duchy of Lorraine.

Construction began in March 1752 and ended in November 1755. The place itself with the adjacent buildings was designed by the architect Emmanuel Héré, he is surrounded by ornate ironwork, which are the work of Jean Lamours. Middle of the square there was a cast iron statue of Louis XV. , But it has been removed during the French Revolution. 1831 instead a statue of Stanislas was built, since the place is called Place Stanislas.
