Origin

The valid in the Polish armed forces scheme of rank designations based on national traditions, derives in part from the joint military history with neighboring countries from, but it is ajar also to the structures of the NATO partners. Some ranks as Chorąży ( Ensign ) Go back to the Middle Ages. However, only some of the names is of Slavic origin, as well Pulkownik ( pulk - regiment ) or Porucznik ( poruczać - trust: a person who is entrusted to an item or an object ). Until the Second World War, different names for the same ranks were used in the branches of the army. So it was in the infantry a Sierżant ( Sergeant ) in the artillery Ogniomistrz (Fire Master, see pyrotechnician ), in which the cavalry the Wachmistrz ( sergeant ).

Until modern times, the classification of rank designations by Prussia, Austria -Hungary and Russia were affected who had divided Poland 1795-1918 among themselves. Many of the Polish officers who built up with the rebirth of the Polish state after the First World War, its own army, had previously served in the armed forces one of the three partitioning powers.

Traditions

In the Polish language the salutation Panie (Lord) of rank designation is presented: Panie Majorze - Major.
