The Pont Mirabeau is a Paris bridge, which was built in 1893-1896. It is classified as a monument historique since April 29, 1975.

Location

The bridge spans the Seine, between the 15th and the 16th arrondissement of Paris. It connects the ends in a roundabout Rue de la Convention on the left bank to the Place de Barcelone and Rue de Rémusat on the right bank. On the left bank located upstream of Javel station, which is served by the RER line C.

History

The French President Sadi Carnot decided to erect on January 12, 1893 a new bridge next to the intersection of Avenue de Versailles and rue Mirabeau. It was conceived by engineer Paul Rabel, who was responsible at the time for the construction of all bridges of Paris. He got it by the engineers Jean Amédée Alby Résal and support. The necessary works were carried out by the company Daydé & Pillé.

Architecture

The span of the main arch is 93 meters, which of the two side arches 32.4 meters. While the western arc close to the shore along a road leading spans the east limb extends over a pier and extending a railway overpass the RER. At the time of its construction, the bridge had the largest existing length - to-height ratio of 16:1. The length of the bridge is 173 meters long and 20 meters, where the road leading over 12 meters and the two adjacent sidewalks are each 4 feet wide.

The two bridge piers are ship -shaped and protrude just above the Seine beyond. They are decorated with four allegorical statues by Jean -Antoine Injalbert: the city of Paris ( the bow of the boat on the right bank ), shipping ( rear ), the abundance (bug on the left ) and trade ( rear ). The two allegories at the bow (Paris and abundance ) look at the Seine, while the two allegories at the rear ( shipping and trading ) are facing the bridge.

The four statues are each surmounted at the height of the parapet from the coat of arms of the city of Paris.

At the western end of the bridge can be two stairways ( downriver and upriver ) descend to the shore road, while on the eastern shore leading down two ramps to the Port autonomous de Paris.

In art and media

  • Le Pont Mirabeau is the name of a poem by Guillaume Apollinaire poems from the collection Alcools.
  • This poem was set to music by multiple singers. Among the performers include Léo Ferré (1953 ), Marc Lavoine ( 2001) and the group chanson plus bifluorée ( 2011). Serge Reggiani has proposed its own reading. Georges Brassens refers to the poem in his Chanson Les Ricochets. There is also a choral version of the Quebecois singer and composer Lionel Daunais.
  • Thomas Fersen wrote a piece titled Pont Mirabeau, which is found on the album Les ronds de carotte.
  • In the episode, Lex eaux troubles de Javel of the third season of the TV series Nestor Burma a body is fished out of the water at the bridge.
  • It is believed that Paul Celan on the night of 19th to April 20th, 1970 fell from the bridge and committed suicide.
