Ponta Garça is a comune ( freguesia ) in a circle ( concelho ) of Vila Franca do Campo. It lies on the Portuguese Atlantic island of São Miguel, which belongs to the Azores. Covering an area of 29.4 km ² live 3541 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011) in the community was / is equivalent to a population density of 120.6 inhabitants km ².

The parents of the internationally famous pop singer Nelly Furtado (born 1978 ) come from Ponta Garça. They emigrated in 1967 against the Salazar dictatorship to Canada.

History

As of 1436, the island was inhabited. Ponta Garça was 1480 already. The municipality became independent during the 16th century.

Attractions

The listed Farol da Ponta da Garça was put into service in 1957.

The three-nave parish church Igreja de Paroquial Ponta Garça is a listed building. The after their patron also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Portuguese for: Church of Our Lady of Mercy ) called Mannerist church was rebuilt in 1530 and expanded several times after their initial establishment.

The mansion Solar Visconde Botelho dates from the 15th century and was in the 1940s a characteristic castle tower.

In the township the chapel Ermida also are there to see Senhora das Mercês from the 18th century and various stone fountains.
