The Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico ( Spanish: Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico, in short: PUCPR ) is a Puerto Rican University of pontifical right.

History

The Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico was first founded in 1948 as the Catholic University of Santa Maria of James Edward McManus C.Ss.R., Bishop of Ponce, and James Peter Davis, Archbishop of San Juan de Puerto Rico. Was founding president Vicente Murga. Higher seat was in the Colegio San Conrado in Ponce, a Catholic primary school. 1949 120 km ² were approved for development by the government agencies. In 1950 the name changed to Catholic University of Puerto Rico. Under Pope John Paul II on January 25, 1991, the granting of university pontifical right.

In 1961 the Law School ( Escuela de Derecho ) was established to initiate an exchange program with the U.S. and Spain and Rafael Hernández Colón as faculty, Governor of Puerto Rico obliged. 1976 taught you a medicine faculty ( Escuela de Medicina), from which in 1980 the Ponce School of Medicine & Health Services founded out. Opened in 2009, one from the Faculty of Architecture. It will set up the faculties graphic design and fashion design as well as a film school.

Public Characters of PUCPR were Fremiot Juan Torres Luis Cardinal Aponte Martínez and Oliver and Ivan Illich.

Organization

The university offers bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. studies.

Headquarters of the university is in Canas Urbano, a district of Ponce. In 1982, the Pontifical Catholic University offshoot of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez Mayagüez and Pontifical Catholic University in Puerto Rico at Arecibo in Arecibo, first as a university center, from 1996 Mayagüez campus, respectively. Arecibo Campus founded. Another campus is available in Coamo.
