Pontville, Tasmania

Pontville is a rural community in south-east Tasmania, some 35 km north of Hobart. In the census in 2006, the site had 2166 inhabitants.

History

Due to its location on the road between Hobart and Launceston to Pontville already formed in the 1820s out as an important resting place. In the first half of the 19th century in addition a military base was built. In 1832 the first post office, opened under the name of Brighton, and renamed in 1895 in Pontville. From 1891 to 1947 there was a railway connection to Hobart.

The barracks is closed today and will be used in the future as a refugee camp for asylum seekers.
