Poonthura ( Malayalam പൂന്തുറ puntura [pu ː NDura ] ) is a suburb of Thiruvananthapuram, capital of Kerala state, in the southwestern part of India. Poonthura is located near the international airport of Trivandrum.

Location

Poonthura consists of several smaller settlements which extend generally along the coast. Apart from Hinduism and Islam, Christianity is the most pronounced faith.

A bypass of the national highway 47 crosses Poonthura towards Kovalam. Passenger buses of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation commute between Poonthura and the East Fort and Thiruvananthapuram. By bus, various other places of the city can be reached. The International airport of Thiruvananthapuram is only six kilometers away.

Economy

The locals are mostly fishermen. Some of the residents are also engaged in the Persian Gulf region.
