Pope Leo V

Leo V. was August-September 903 for about 30 days (according to other sources from July to September ) Pope. His name means: the lion (latin )

About Leo V., little is known. A Breton Legend has it that St. Tugdual, the patron saint of Treguier, went on pilgrimage to Rome, and was elevated to the papacy there. This version is supported by the fact that Leo according to the Roman catalog named " Leo britigena " accepted. Another version says that he was from Priapi, a village near the town of Ardea, south of Rome. Since he was not one of the cardinal priests of Rome in his choice, he was described in contemporary accounts as " Presbiter forensis ".

About his work as Pope is only known that he wrote a cop who issued the canons of Bologna certain taxes. The contemporary author Auxilius said of him that he had been fame worthy a man of God and his life and holiness.

After a period of about 30 days, he was overthrown and imprisoned by the Cardinal Priest Christopher of St. Damasus. Christopher went to the Pope, but was in turn 904 in January of Sergius III. violently overthrown.

About Leo's death, nothing certain is known. One version says Christopher was imprisoned and strangled him, another indicates his successor in office Sergius III. had with his two predecessors detained " compassion " and be put to death. The Catholic Encyclopedia considers it most likely that he died in prison or in a monastery a natural death. His bones are suspected in the Lateran, St. Peter.
