Poughkeepsie is a town in Dutchess County, New York, United States. In 2000, the city had 42,777 inhabitants. The name of the Town and City of the same name, is " Uppu - qui - IPI -in" derived from the Indian term, which roughly means " reed-covered hut by the water"

Geography

History

The town was settled in 1780 for the first time and formally founded in 1788 when the county was generally divided into Towns. 1854 was the western part of the Town of Poughkeepsie, at that time already an independent Village, raised to the City of Poughkeepsie.
