On 30 June 2011, the city had 2161 inhabitants ² on an area of 26.2 km.

History

After first landing in 1427 began in Povoaçao (Portuguese for locality ) from the 1432 settlement of the island. After the further course other villages had arisen Povoaçao belonged to the circle of Vila Franca do Campo. After it had later joined the group Nordeste, it was 1839 headquarters of an independent circuit.

Culture and sights

The eminent botanical Terra Nostra Park and the thermal baths of Estação Termal das Furnas Furnas in the community are in a circle. With the Furnas Lake, the second largest lake in the Azores is located in the district.

Among the monuments in the district of Terra Nostra Park, the spa, various public buildings and a number include religious buildings. Also the mansion Casa das Murtas with its park is one of them. In addition, the historical center of Povoaçao as a whole is under monument protection.
