Prachanda

Pushpa Kamal Dahal, known as Prachanda ( Nepali: प्रचण्ड; German: the Fierce ) ( born December 11, 1954) is the Chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal ( Maoist ) and was commander of the Maoist rebels of Nepal. From August 2008 to May 2009 he was the prime minister of Nepal.

Life

Prachanda was born as the oldest of eight children in a village in the mountains near the city of Pokhara in central Nepal. He studied agricultural science and in 1971 a member of the Communist Party of Nepal, several times aufsplittete in the subsequent period in independent parties. Since 1996 he was the leader of the rebel armed uprising against the feudal institutions and against the monarchy in Nepal. Since the beginning of the " people's war ", he lived with around 10,000 fighters in the underground.

In 2006, he no longer declared a communist rule their goal and signed with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala an agreement to end the 12- year civil war, but the government parties proposed, on one of the main demands of the Maoists, namely the abolition of the monarchy to address.

On 15 August 2008 he was elected Prime Minister of Nepal and prevailed against his only rival Sher Bahadur Deuba of the Congress Party.

After Dahal had been defeated in a power struggle with the military leadership of Nepal, he announced on 4 May 2009 to his resignation. Dahal had army chief Rookmangud Katawal released the day before, because the army refused to accept former Maoist guerrilla fighters in their ranks. This decision led to the exit of several parties from the Government of Nepal, Ram Baran Yadav whereupon President revoked the dismissal Katawals. Successor of the then retired Dahals was the leader of the Marxist-Leninists Madhav Kumar Nepal.
