Princess Maria Amalia of Saxony
Maria Antonia Josephina Justina Augusta Amalie Anna Aloysia Xaveria Johanna Magdalena Nepomucena Walpurgis Catherine of Saxony ( born September 26, 1757 in Dresden, † April 20, 1831 in Neuburg an der Donau) was a Saxon princess from the Albertine line of the Wettin dynasty and by marriage Duchess of Palatinate -Zweibrücken. Maria Amalie was Abbess of the Ladies of St. Anne pen in Munich.
Life
Maria Amalie was the sixth child and eldest daughter of the Elector Friedrich Christian (1722-1763) of Saxony from his marriage to Maria Antonia of Bavaria (1724-1780), daughter of Emperor Charles VII Her brothers were the kings of Saxony Friedrich August I. and Anton. She was also a cousin of the King Louis XVI. of France and Charles IV of Spain and Empress Maria Ludovica.
Maria Amalie married on February 12, 1774 in Dresden, Count Palatine of Birkenfeld - Charles II August Bischweiler ( 1746-1795 ). Maria Amalie's brother Frederick Augustus had married in 1769 a sister of the groom. The couple resided after the wedding at Schloss Neuburg and a year later, Karl August, 1775 after the death of his uncle Duke of Palatinate -Zweibrücken.
Marie Amalie was Grand Master of the Order of St. Elisabeth and after the death of her husband in 1798 Abbess of the Ladies of St. Anne pen in Munich, whose statutes were amended several times in her tenure by Elector and King Maximilian Joseph. Maria Amalie is interred in the Hofkirche in Neuburg an der Donau.
