History

His first city rights ( Foral ) was the place in 1244, under the name Cortiçeiro (from Portuguese: Cortiça, dt: cork). In the course of his administrative reforms King Manuel I. confirmed in 1512 the city charter, which at the same time the place name in Vila Melhorada (German: improved small town ) was changed. In the 16th century the place was then given its present name.

During the Napoleonic wars on the Iberian Peninsula saw the place in 1810, heavy destruction by the French troops. Over the next Liberal revolution in Portugal, the previously absolutist -minded people turned to the Liberals. As 1828 absolutist troops on the way to liberal Coimbra camped here, the soldiers were taken from the population to rise up and join the eventually victorious uprising of the Liberals.

Until 1834 Proença- a-Nova belonged to the district of Santarém to since then to include the District of Castelo Branco.

Culture and sights

One of the numerous protected monuments of the circle include historic public buildings, fountains, historic houses, and a variety of religious buildings, including the main church Igreja Paroquial de Proença- a-Nova (also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção ), a converted 18th century baroque and Mannerist elements pointing church from the 16th century. The Roman bridge of Proença- a-Nova, the Ponte Romana do Malhadal, is a listed building.

Proença- a-Nova has a municipal park, Jardim de Santa Margarida, and two provided with extensive infrastructure river baths, of which the Praia Fluvial de Aldeia Ruiva was recognized as particularly disabled.

The village of Figueira is part of the route of aldeias do xisto, the connected by hiking trails and marketed jointly, traditional slate villages of the region. Of the eight signposted hiking trails in the county Proença the PR8 Proenca -a-Nova itself begins and ends in Figueira. Proença- a-Nova is also within the Geopark Naturtejo, along the trails PR2 and PR6 Miradouros offer views of rock formations, natural lakes and waterfalls, bird watching is also possible here.

A number of houses of rural tourism are housed in historic buildings mostly.

Proença- a-Nova is the administrative seat of the homonymous district. The neighboring districts are ( clockwise beginning in the north): Oleiros, Castelo Branco, Vila Velha de Ródão, Mação and Sertã.
