Prussian S 3

The steam locomotives of Class S 3 were developed by Hanomag wet steam locomotives of the Prussian state railways and manufactured since 1893.

Construction and performance

The S 3 was a wet steam locomotive composite with a high-pressure and low-pressure cylinders of the type 2'B n2V. She was a further development of S 2, of the well, the vessel was taken. Since at the time of the construction of major hubs 16 m were available, the wheel base with respect to the S 2 could be prolonged, resulting in better running characteristics.

The machines of the genus S 3 were formed an express train of ten coaches carrying (corresponding to a draw weight of 320 t ) in the plane with 75 km / h. On a slope of ten parts per thousand or 150 have been t with 50 km / h overcome.

Reinforced S3

From 1900 different versions of a four-cylinder compound locomotive as a species of the type S 5 2'B N4V were built, which should allow greater performance than the previously built S3 and S4. However, this did not meet the expectations. To meet the demand, was therefore the proven S built by Maschinenbau AG Vulcan Stettin 3 in a reinforced version, with a larger tank and larger steam cylinders were used. These locomotives were first known as Enhanced S 3, from 1911 as S 5.2. Eight locomotives were accidentally but out after 1911 as S 3. By Vulcan and Schichau total of 367 aircraft were delivered to the Prussian State Railways 1905-1911.

Dissemination

The Prussian state railways procured to 1904 a total of 1027 locomotives of this type that were located in almost all operating plants. She was thus the most-built German express locomotive.

A further 40 copies went to the Imperial Railways in Alsace-Lorraine (see Alsace -Lorraine S 3) and six pieces with modified wheel base at the Oldenburg State Railways ( see Oldenburgische S 3).

Whereabouts

After the First World War, more than 100 machines were retained by the Polish and Lithuanian Railways, where they were partly to the 1940s in use. They were in the Second World War, partly as 13 010, 301, 302, 305-337, 339 and 340 filed in the stock of the Reichsbahn. Some of these locomotives were until 1955 in the inventory of the DR and were then returned only to Poland. The remaining 13 021 in the West was in 1950 was in the stock of DB but the z set scrapped.

After renumbering plan for steam locomotives of 1923 451 S 3 of the Prussian State Railways as 13008-458 were taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Of these, only 27 remained in 1925 as the class 13.0 with numbers 13002-028 left. The 13 001 was no S 3, but a converted to composite action Prussian S 2 type Erfurt. The machines were retired by 1927.

The liabilities assumed by the Oldenburg State Railways locomotives were given road numbers 1925 13 1801 to 1806, but have been retired a year later.
