Psy

Park Jae -sang ( Kor. 박재상; born December 31, 1977 in Seoul) is a South Korean singer and rapper, better known by his stage name Psy ( pronunciation: [ saɪ ] Hangeul: 싸이 ).

Biography

1977-1995: Childhood and youth

Park Jae -sang spent his early years in Seoul's Gangnam neighborhood, where his father worked as an entrepreneur.

1996-2000: Studies in the United States

In 1996, park his studies in the U.S. at Boston University, but it broke after a short time again. In 1998, he wrote, again in Boston, at the Berklee College of Music and took there many core courses. In 2000 he returned to his hometown, but without having obtained a university degree.

2001-2009: Early career and first successes

In January 2001, published his debut album Psy PSY from the Psycho World! 2006 won Psy at the Mnet Asian Music Awards the Best Video Performer of the Year Award.

In South Korea, a general conscription applies to men aged 18 to 35 years. From 2008-2009 Psy did his military service.

2010-2012: Change to YG Entertainment

Psys absence in the K-pop music industry meant that it gradually fell into financial difficulties. In order to grow professionally, he moved to YG Entertainment, a South Korean artist agency and K-pop music label.

2012 until today: Gangnam style and the international break

On July 15, 2012 Gangnam style was released by his record label YG Entertainment. In the U.S. alone the song over 4 million copies bought. Numerous U.S. media designated 2012 as the year in which K -pop, not least thanks to the success of Gangnam style, reached the USA. Also, German media reported amplified by the success.

Worldwide, including Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Germany, Finland, France, Great Britain, Italy, Canada, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Austria, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland, Spain, South Korea and the Czech Republic reached top positions in the singles charts.

In April 2013, YG Entertainment and Psy began filming for the single gentleman. The single was on the day of its publication in South Korea's most downloaded titles.
