The Puget Sound ( pju ː dʒɪt saʊnd ) is a sound in the northwest of the U.S. state of Washington.
The 150 km long, island rich and diverse Bay was named by George Vancouver after Peter Puget, one of his officers. The Indians called this area Puget Sound " Whulge ". At the northern main entrance are located west of Point Wilson on the Olympic Peninsula, and Point Partridge on Whidbey Iceland. In addition, there are two other approaches.
On July 4, 1792 Vancouver claimed the bay for the UK. It was part of Oregon County and 1846 by the Oregon compromise (Oregon Treaty ) of the territory of the United States of America.
In the years 1855 and 1856 there were armed clashes between the army of the United States and several Indian groups in the Puget Sound, which was named after the Puget Sound War.
With the Treaty of Point Elliott 22 of the nearly 30 Native American tribes were relocated to reservations. Many local and river names remember them. So, about the Seattle mocked version of the name of an Indian chief.
The Puget Sound urban region is located around the city of Seattle and comprises nine districts ( counties ). In addition to the larger city of Tacoma due to the Sound are four smaller cities. Both Seattle and Tacoma have large industrial port on Puget Sound.
One of the largest employers in the region is the Microsoft Corporation which has in Redmond, an independent suburb of Seattle, its headquarters. Almost half of all Microsoft employees around the world, namely, approximately 40,000 work in the Puget Sound region. The shipyards at Puget Sound include the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Lockheed Shipbuilding and Construction Company ( closed in 1987 ).
