Redmond is a city in King County, Washington state. According to one estimate, the city had a total population of 51 320 inhabitants in 2008.

Geography

Redmond is located east of Seattle, north of Lake Sammamish and beyond Lake Washington. Together with Bellevue and some other cities, this region is called the East Side of the compression chamber on Puget Sound. According to United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 42.9 km ². 1.7 km ² (4% ) of which is water area.

History

Redmond is named after Luke McRedmond, who bought land there on 9 September 1870. On 31 December 1912, and received its charter.

Economy

Redmond is known as the corporate headquarters of Microsoft, around 40,000 people (about a third of all residents ) are in this region employed by Microsoft.

In addition to the software manufacturer Microsoft Redmond is also home to the U.S. headquarters of Nintendo, but also AT & T Wireless (a subsidiary of AT & T) and Eddie Bauer have their headquarters there. The place is called for its annual bicycle race that exists since 1940, even " the bicycle capital of the Northwest ". Redmond has many parks and is known for its forested beauty. Long derided as " the city in which you can not buy underwear " because it hardly had retail, Redmond went through during the 1990s, a veritable " trade boom". This led in 1997 to the opening of the Redmond Town Center, which is the main shopping center of the region today.
