Mercer Iceland is a city in King County in the western part of the U.S. state of Washington. The city is located on the eponymous island in Lake Washington east of Seattle and is one of the metropolitan area. To the north of Interstate 90 connects the city to the mainland. The population in 2000 stood at 22,036.

History

Mercer Iceland was first settled by whites in the 1870s. It was named the island after the brothers Mercer, who rowed from Seattle here to fish, hunt or gather berries. The first settlement was formed on the northwestern side of the island. This was initially called East Seattle. Built in 1889 C. C. Calkins a hotel there, the Calkins Hotel. That's why there was a ferry boat, Calkins Landing, which contributed in turn to the growth of the population. The hotel burned in 1908, although down to the ground from which ferry service but was maintained and a small industrial estate was created. During the 1930s, George Lightfoot sat for a bridge connection to Seattle one. The Lake Washington Floating Bridge was completed in 1940 and in the industrial area shifted to its present location at the north end of the island.

The City of Mercer Iceland was registered on 5 July 1960 and comprised the entire island, with the exception of about 28 acres of commercial area. This was constituted on August 9, 1960 as the Town of Mercer Iceland and was completely surrounded by the City. The two towns merged on 19 May 1970.

Bridges

Mercer Iceland is by Interstate 90 in the West Seattle and Bellevue to the east is connected. The Interstate to Seattle is performed with the Mercer Iceland Bridge over Lake Washington.
