Des Moines is a city in King County in the U.S. state of Washington. In 2000 lived in Des Moines 29 267 people; an estimate in 2009 showed a population of 29 258.

Des Moines is part of the Seattle metropolitan area.

Geography

Des Moines is located at 47 ° 23'39 " north latitude and 122 ° 19'5 " west longitude and extending over 16.42 km ², which consist exclusively of land area.

Des Moines is located south of Seattle on the eastern shore of Puget Sound, a widely ramified about 150 km inland reaching bay of the Pacific Ocean.

History

Before the arrival of the first Europeans Indians populated the tribes of the Duwamish and Muckleshoot the region and operated mainly fishing.

With the under the command of George Vancouver HMS Discovery, the first Europeans arrived in the area.

By Charles Wilkes led United States Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842 first Americans arrived in the region around the present town of Des Moines.

The first known white settler was John Moore, who in 1867 settled. 1889 was parceled out by the Des Moines City Improvement Company country and sold to interested settlers. The main industry was the timber industry.

After the traffic initially took place only on the water, was built with the Brick Highway 1916, the first street. In the same year the ferry across the Puget Sound from Des Moines was taken to Portage. The ferry reversed until 1921. Until the Second World War, the region was still heavily reliant on agriculture.

In the June 1959 Des Moines was officially declared a town.

The most visited place in the city is the Marina opened in 1970. In 1980, a 200 m long concrete pier for anglers was built on the northern edge of the marina.

Demographic data

In the official census in 2000, a population of 29 267 was determined. These distributed to 11,337 households in 7,289 families. The population density was 1782.3 people per square kilometer. There were 11,854 residential buildings, which corresponded to a housing density of 721.9 per square kilometer buildings.

The population was in 2000 from 74.2 percent white, 7.2 percent African American, 1.0 percent Native Americans, Asians 8.3 percent and 4.6 percent other. 4.8 percent said to be descended from at least two of these groups. 6.6 percent of the population consisted of Hispanics who belonged to the various of the aforementioned groups.

23.8 percent were under the age of 18, 8.3 percent from 18 to 24, 31.1 percent of 25-44, 22.0 percent from 45 to 64 and 14.9 percent 65 and older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females were statistically 93.0 men in the over 18 year-olds was 89.4.

The median income per household was 48 971 U.S. dollars ( USD), the median family income $ 57,003. The median income for men was $ 40,007, and for women about $ 30,553. The per capita income amounted to $ 24,127. Around 5.6 percent of families and 7.6 percent of the total population were below the poverty line income.
