Rádio e Televisão de Portugal, SGPS, SA (RTP ) is the public broadcaster in Portugal. The company consists of the areas Radiodifusão Portuguesa (RDP ) for the radio, Radiotelevisão Portuguesa (RTP ) for television, as well as RTP Meios de Produção for television productions.

History

The radio station Emissora Nacional de Radiodifusão was established on August 4, 1935. 20 years later, on 15 December 1955 followed by the establishment of the television Radiotelevisão Portuguesa, but only on paper. Finally, in 1956 began test broadcasts from the Feira Popular Studios in Lisbon. The regular Broadcasting began on March 7, 1957, when it reached about 65 percent of the population of Portugal. Mid -1960s was the whole country to be supplied.

In the following years other stations emerged. A second program RTP2 ( dois since 5 January 2004: or 2: called ) was on December 25, 1968 broadcast. In addition, regional channels for Madeira (6 August 1972) and the Azores launched (10 August 1972).

Before the Carnation Revolution RTP was directly subordinate to the former dictatorial regime. This was reflected, for example, in the topics of the news magazine of July 20, 1969, the day of the first moon landing, resist. While the world attended this event, the Portuguese news began with the opening of a concrete factory by the President Américo Tomás.

In summer 2012, the Portuguese government announced that within the framework of large-scale austerity measures to consider a partial privatization and significant reduction of RTP. In protest the management of the company to director Guilherme Costa resigned closed. As a new RTP directors, the government Ponte sat outside the industry then the manager Alberto one there.
