Rajaji-Nationalpark

The Rajaji National Park is located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand near the town of Haridwar was founded in 1984 by the merging of several wildlife sanctuaries. Its name derives from the famous freedom fighter C. Rajagopalachari.

The park has an area of 820 km ² and today about the northeastern limit of distribution of Asian elephants dar. With over 400 copies ( in 1999) he also hosts one of the largest elephant populations in northern India. In the National Park about 30 Bengal tigers were counted at the same time. The park also occur Indian leopards, sloth bears, striped hyenas, Axishirsche, sambar, nilgai, wild boar and Goral. The landscape consists of semi- evergreen forests, deciduous Sal forests and lush grasslands.

Were once the forests of the region with those of the present-day Corbett National Park, which lies about 170 km to the southeast, contiguous. Today, the two reserves, however, are isolated from each other by settlements and agricultural areas.
