Rakkestad is a Norwegian municipality in the province (county ) Østfold. It consists of the districts Degernes, Os and Rakkestad. Degernes and Rakkestad 1964 were merged to form the present-day municipality.

Rakkestad is the surface after the second largest municipality in Østfold and one of the largest agricultural communities in Norway. The economy is dominated by cereal crops, cattle and dairy, grain silos, mills and wood processing. The highest mountain in the municipality is the Line Kleppen (325 moh ).

History

On Høgnipen in Degernes, a former fishing settlement, some of the oldest finds from the Stone Age in Norway have been made, including 11,000 years old stone tools. There are also 3000 year old petroglyphs. The name Rakkestad to be originally derived from the name of a farm and its owner Rakki.

1424 drove out the inhabitants of the Governor Hermann Molteke ( from a German family ) from his fief in Rakkestad. This was not because he was of German descent, but because of his violations of the law, like a preserved letter to King Erik shows: He arrested Hermann Krus at home, brought him handcuffed from the district and seized his assets. He also continued his pregnant wife from spring to autumn, until the day on which it should be delivered, caught. He had also take a further residents and beat his wife so that she never was quite healthy, took his money and brought it out of the district. One other woman he stole 8 yards fabric. From another inhabitant he took without judgment unlawful away a box. He also went armed action against the priest. That's why they had chased him away, and they threatened to leave the district when he came back again. [ Diplomatarium Norvegicum II, No. 681 from June 1, 1424 ]

Traffic

Rakkestad 1862 connected to the eastern part of the Østfold -Bahn (ski Mysen - Sarpsborg ). About the RV 22 Rakkestad with Mysen and Halden, on the RV 111 Sarpsborg and Fredrikstad with and on the RV 124 is connected to Aremark and Askim.
