Rakúsy

Rakúsy ( until 1927 slovak " Rokus "; German Roks or Rox, Hungarian Rókus - to 1907 Rokusz ) a place and a municipality in Okres Kežmarok of Prešov is kraj, with 2819 inhabitants.

Geography

The community is located at the foot of Belianske Tatras, part of the Tatra Mountains, at the eastern end of the valley Podtatranská kotlina (sub - Tatra boiler). Through the capital of the Bach Krivodol north and its tributary flows Čierna voda it. The former opens with Spisská Bela in Poprad. Rakúsy is six kilometers away from Kežmarok.

History

The town was founded in the 13th century and is first mentioned in 1288 Rokus. The original inhabitants were German settlers who migrated into the Hungarian county of Zips. The place was divided until the abolition of serfdom in the 19th century between Junkers and the city Käsmark. The population engaged in agriculture. In the 19th century there was a migration of Slovak families and Roks was a German -Slovak community.

Located in the Kingdom of Hungary until 1918 place came after Czechoslovakia. At the end of the Second World War, the Germans had to leave the church and the place was with the families and relatives of the Roma, who had to leave the military area Javorina populated. Today Roma are estimated to make up about three quarters of the population of the municipality.
