Rappottenstein is a market town with 1726 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in Zwettl district in the north- west of Lower Austria, Waldviertel so-called.

Geography

The market town of Rappottenstein forms with the communities Arbesbach, United Gerungs, long stroke and Altmelon the so-called Waldviertel Highlands, comprising the western part of the district Zwettl. History

Around 1150 the Kuenringer founded a number of castles, their most powerful Rappottenstein was in the Waldviertel to secure their property. Under cover of this fortress soon developed and the current market Rappottenstein. The castle, despite repeated siege - insurgent peasants in 1597, Belgian auxiliary troops in 1619, the Sweden 1645 - was never conquered, came after the Kuenringern to the roof Berger ( 1305) and later at the Star Hemberger ( 1423 ), then at the Protestant Landauer ( 1566 ) and finally was sold to the current owners, the Counts Abensperg and Traun. Since the 14th century Rappottenstein has the right to hold markets, making it one of the oldest market places of the district.

From the period of the castle dates back to the founding parish church, which - originally Romanesque - also has elements of later styles. Around 100 years was the parish Protestant almost 100%, and one of the lords even stood with Luther in correspondence. The cemetery - once located around the church - was finally laid in 1823 on the present site.

There were repeated in the place unpleasant billeting; so lodged troops to the relief of Vienna in 1683 were on the way, some time in Rappottenstein, and the French also here made ​​themselves comfortable. In the great fire of 1849 the town was reduced to ashes up to 7 houses. Also, church, vicarage and school burned down.
