Ray Sheppard

Raymond G. Sheppard ( born May 27, 1966 in Petawawa, Ontario ) is a retired Canadian professional ice hockey player. During his career he played for the Buffalo Sabres, Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, San Jose Sharks, Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League.

Career

Sheppard began his career in 1983 in the Ontario Hockey League at the Cornwall Royals. After his first season there, he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1984 by the Buffalo Sabres in the third round to 60th position. However, the Canadians played two more years with the Royals. In his last season he scored 142 points in 63 games, which at the end of the season with the Red Tilson Trophy for the most valuable player in the OHL, the Eddie Powers Memorial Trophy was awarded for the OHL leading scorer and the appointment to the All-Star team.

His first professional season was played by the right winger initially with the American Hockey League farm team of the Buffalo Sabres, the Rochester Americans. For the season 1987/88 Sheppard then moved into the NHL with the Sabres. There he played until the end of the 1989/90 season, in which he made the basis of a joint injury only 18. In the summer of 1990 he spent a year with the New York Rangers. As a free agent the following summer he went to the Detroit Red Wings, where he remained until October 1995 before him Detroit charges in exchange for Igor Larionov to the San Jose Sharks. For the Red Wings, he had in the 1993/94 season with 93 points in 82 games, the best season of his career. Since the Sharks could not qualify for the playoffs in the game year 1995/96, Sheppard moved to only 51 games with the Florida Panthers, with whom he reached the finals for the Stanley Cup in the same year.
