Raymond Dumais

Raymond Dumais ( born June 4, 1950 in Amqui, Quebec; † October 19, 2012 in Rimouski, Quebec ) was Bishop of Gaspé.

Life

Raymond Dumais attended the Collège Saint- Benoît- Labre Amqui (1963 /68) and the Cégep de Rimouski (1968 /70). After his philosophical and theological studies at the Université du Québec à Rimouski (1970 /76) he received on 26 June 1976, the priesthood by Joseph Marie Régis Belzile, Bishop of Moundou. He was vicar from 1976 to 1980 in Saint- Jérôme. At the Institut Catholique de Paris (1980 /83), he graduated with a Masters in Theology and the Dominican College in Ottawa (1990/ 93) with a degree biblical studies, where he also received his doctorate. From 1984 to 1990 he was responsible for adult education of the diocese and had a seat on the subcommittee for adults of the Bishops Conference of Québec. From 1984 to 1990 he was a representative of his diocese in the Bible Society, and from 1984 to 1993 lecturer at the Université du Québec à Rimouski and postdoctoral fellow at UQAR. 1992/93 he graduated from biblical and archaeological developments in Jerusalem.

Dumais was published by opponents of John Paul II in 1993 encyclical " Veritatis Splendor ," in particular, he criticized the rejection of artificial contraception and the exclusion of remarried divorced Catholics from the sacraments. Nevertheless, it was granted after talks with Cardinal Ratzinger of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Nihil osta for office of a bishop.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on December 27, 1993 Bishop of Gaspé. The Archbishop of Rimouski, Bertrand Blanchet, donated to him on 20 May 1994, the episcopal ordination; Co-consecrators were Joseph Paul Pierre Morissette, Bishop of Baie- Comeau, and Joseph Gilles Napoléon Ouellet PME, Archbishop Emeritus of Rimouski.

On July 21, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his request for laicization and his resignation after he had publicly expressed, with a woman. After transfer to the laity he married and adopted the two children of his wife. Since 2002 he worked for the Pastoral Institute of the Archdiocese of Rimouski.

Awards

Raymond Dumais was in 1992 awarded the prix de l' Association catholique of études bibliques au Canada ( ACEBAC ).
