Red's Dream

Reds dream is a four-minute, animated short film, which was produced in 1987 by Pixar. It is the only Pixar film that was created on the Pixar Image Computer, and the first which contains an organic character.

Action

In a rainy night is a red unicycle, called Red, in the special offer corner of Eben 's Bikes, a bicycle shop. While the camera drives up to Red, the rain seems to turn into a drum roll and the scene changes to the clown Lumpy, which runs on Red with moderate applause in a circus arena. Lumpy starts with three balls to juggle, but leaves off and fall to the ball, which is then inexplicably played back to him. In a particularly far failed thrown ball is clear that the unicycle has saved the juggling. The clown falls to the ground when he noticed that he practically rides in the air, but Red catches the other dropped balls and brings the number to thunderous applause at the end. But then the clapping again transformed into the sound of the rain and Red wakes up from his dream on. Depressed, he returns to the area with the special offers.

Special

John Lasseter referred to jokingly as the short film from Pixar 's Blue Period, due to the sad mood and the lack of a happy ending. There are some references to earlier short films by Pixar: André from The Adventures of André and Wally B. is on the dial of the clock in the bike shop and the small lamp remind Luxo on the desk and the floor of the circus arena in the dream sequence. The store is named after Eben Ostby, an employee of Pixar and enthusiastic cyclists. Technically, the short film contains many improvements in the field of computer animation. The Pixar Image Computer shortened with the rendering software used ChapReyes the calculations of each frame by a factor of 18 A conventional computers of that time would have to calculate the nearly two-minute dream sequence takes about 9 months. Reds dream was published at SIGGRAPH 1987, and at the Tiny Toy Stories -VHS cassette.
