Reichenau is a municipality with 1904 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Feldkirchen in Carinthia.

Geography

Geographical location

The municipality is located in 1,010 m ( Gurk at St. Margaret ) to 2,334 m ( summit of Klomnocks ) above sea level in the Gurktaler Alps. It covers essentially the catchment area of ​​the top Gurk and has in the north portion of the Turracherhöhe and the Turrachersee which Reichenau shares with the adjacent Styrian municipality Predlitz -Turrach known as a ski resort.

Waters

Main river in the municipal area is the headwaters of Gurk, which is fed here by several small tributaries.

There are several, mostly small lakes in Reichenau, of which especially the mountain lakes Turrachersee in 1,763 m and 1,872 m above sea level in the Falkertsee as destinations via the municipal boundaries are known. The two smaller lakes Grünsee and Schwarzsee at the Turrach be due to popular hiking trails.

History

The Gurktaler Alps were uninhabited until the Bronze Age. In Ebene Reichenau indicated an old iron mine on a settlement in Celtic- Roman times to go, and the river name of Gurk is reminiscent of pre-Roman settlement. At the time of the Gurktal Noricum was partly inhabited by Roman colonists, that they also settled in the territory of the present municipality of Reichenau, however, there is no evidence. Towards the end of the migrations in the late 6th century attracted the Keltoromanen, beset by Slavic settlers in the more remote valleys back. At first Slavic places the extension " itz " indicates the place names, such as the situated near Reichenau Albeck and Flattnitz. The Upper Gurktal was still in the 9th century, when along the Gurk Gurk and already places like places to Strasbourg were called, almost uninhabited.

The marshy valley floor was cultivated and populated only after 1300. So Reichenau was only in 1332 first mentioned, the name suggests an opening up the field by burning ( " Räuchn " ) back. The Protestant Church in Wiedweg was built in 1845 as Toleranzbethaus.

In 1928, a bus service was set up on the Turracherhöhe. Since that time, modern tourism developed in Reichenau.

Population

According to 2001 census Reichenau has 2,029 inhabitants, of which 97.0 % have Austrian citizenship. 79.9 % of the population are Roman Catholic, 15.8% for the Protestant Church and 3.6 % have no religious confession.

Culture and sights

  • The present parish church of St. Martin at the southern end of Ebene Reichenau was in 1384 on the occasion of the consecration of a chapel Sts. Andreas and Martin first mentioned. St. Martin was Lorenzen to 1754 Branch St. and then given its own vicariate in 1812 she became a parish church. The surrounding the church cemetery was consecrated in 1806. The present church was built in the mid 18th century in the late Baroque style. The employees at the choir tower has round-arched openings and a sound pyramid pointed roof.

  • The parish church of St. Margaret in St. Margaret was first mentioned in documents in 1307 and 1433 as a parish church. In its present form it was built in the late 15th century in the Gothic style. It has a square tower with porch spitzgiebeligem spire of the 19th century. On the north side of the choir slightly retracted a sacristy. On the south facade, a wall painting of St. Christopher was placed in the 15th century.
  • The Protestant parish church in Wiedweg was first mentioned in 1787 as a branch of St. Magarethen or Wiederschwing. Wiedweg was until 1898 Branch of Feld am See, then to 1950 Gnesau, since 1954 Wiedweg independent parish. The present church was built in 1844 from Villach- builder Simon Pirker.
  • The Branch Church of St. Anna above St. Lorenzen is a late Baroque style, originally Gothic building of the 14th century. It was renewed at the end of the 18th century to the west, provided with a roof turret with rundbogiger sound hole and a delicate onion dome. The Baunaht is still clearly visible on both the north and on the south side.
  • Located on the road to the Turrach at the level of the village Winkl the Devil's Bridge. The stone masonry, 1893 built on site of an older building stone bridge crosses the gorge of the rod Bach. After she could no longer meet the demands of automobile traffic, it was replaced in 1978 by a wider reinforced concrete bridge as a traffic route; a part of the older structure, however, is still to be seen.
  • Located southwest of Ebene Reichenau, in the village of shot, is a landmark ( ref. 1814), which marked the border between Illyria and the Empire of Austria after the Napoleonic Wars.

Economy and infrastructure

Traffic

The upper Gurktal is from the street, also known as Turracher former state highway 95 crossed in a north-south direction, connects the Mur Valley in the north to the Klagenfurt basin. Between Father streets and Wiedweg the Kleinkirchheimer Straße (B 88 ) branches as connecting via Kleinkirchheim to Radenthein runs in a westerly direction from her. Coat of arms
