Reinhard Klimmt

He was from 1998 to 1999 Minister-President of Saarland and 1999-2000 Federal Minister of Transport, Building and Housing.

Life and career

Klimmt grew up in Engter near Osnabrück. He made his Abitur at the Ernst Moritz Arndt Gymnasium in Osnabrück. There he trained as a cellist during his school days at the Conservatory. After high school he studied at the University of Saarland history.

Klimmt has worked as author and columnist in the field of literature. He is married and has three children and four grandchildren. He is a member of P.E.N. - Center of German-speaking authors abroad and in the Saarland Künstlerhaus.

For several decades Klimmt collects traditional African art and entered since 2002 also increased as a collector to the public. His collection was exhibited at various places in Germany and, most recently under the auspices of Gerhard Schröder in St. Petersburg in Russia. Critics assume that the collection of copies and fakes bein think what Klimmt denies relying on scientific advice.

Party

Klimmt is a member of the SPD since 1964 and has held a variety of offices. Between 1970 and 1975 he was chairman of the Young Socialists Saarland from 1976 to 1996 Chairman of the SPD Saarbrücken. The party executive of the SPD, he belonged to 1991-2001. In 1990, he led the election campaign for Oskar Lafontaine.

He was elected as the successor of Oskar Lafontaine to the state chairman of the SPD Saarland in 1996. He resigned from this position in 2000 in consequence of his resignation as Minister of Transport back. Since 2008 he has been Vice President of SaarLorLux International, a federation of social democratic and socialist parties in Lorraine, Luxembourg, Wallonia, the German-speaking Community of Belgium, in Rhineland -Palatinate and Saarland.

Member of Parliament

From 1979 to 1982 he was deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group. His focus was on education policy, especially in vocational education and in the media policy. His particular interest was the cross-border cooperation with France and Lorraine.

On the evening of November 15, 2000 Klimmt resigned as Federal Minister of Transport. Previously, the District Court Trier had issued a penal fee of 90 daily ( 27,000 DM) due to embezzlement, which he accepted. The penalty order was issued as President of the Saarland Football Club 1.FC Saarbrücken because of questionable financial transactions under Klimmts volunteering. The banks had the club conceded an extension of the overused lines of credit only on the condition that Klimmt would be president of the association, which accepted this, otherwise the club would have had to go into bankruptcy. Klimmt had then signed in the early days of his tenure at the 1 FC Saarbrücken negotiated by his predecessor sponsorship agreements with Caritas Trägergesellschaft Trier.
