Richard Maack

Richard Karlovich Maack (Russian Ричард Карлович Маак; * 23 Augustjul / 4 September 1825greg in Kuressaare on Saaremaa, Estonia today, .. .. † 13 Novemberjul / 25 November 1886greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian - deutschbaltisch naturalist, educator and explorer of Siberia and the Russian Far East.

Life

After attending the State University of Saint Petersburg Maack was from 1852 teacher and later headmaster in Irkutsk, 1868-1879 Chief Inspector for schools in Eastern Siberia, then council member of the National Education Ministry of the Russian Empire in the capital.

In the 1850s, Maack undertook a series of expeditions, so from 1853 to 1855 in the Wiljui Circle (now part of the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia) ), where he first orography, geology and population of the catchment areas of Wiljui, Tschona and Olenjok examined and described, from 1855 to 1856 in the Amur region and - after connecting it to the Russian Empire - 1859 to 1860 in the Ussuri region.

Maack also described several new species of plants, mostly in Eduard August von fluke Tentamen florae ussuriensis.

In honor of Richard Maack named the Austro- Russian botanist Franz Josef Ruprecht the Manchurian or Amur Cherry ( Prunus maackii ), the Honeysuckle Lonicera maackii ( Amur honeysuckle ) and the Fabaceae genus Maackia with the Asian yellow wood ( Maackia amurensis ).
