Robert Armstrong, Baron Armstrong of Ilminster

Robert Temple Armstrong, Baron Armstrong of Ilminster GCB, CVO ( born March 30, 1927) is a British politician and life peer.

Life and career

Robert Armstrong was born as the son of musician Sir Thomas Armstrong (1898-1994) and Hester Muriel Draper (* 1897). He has a younger sister. He attended the King's Scholar and Newcastle Scholar ( Fellow ) of the Dragon School and then Eton College from Christ Church College in Oxford, where he attained a degree in Greats ( Greek and Roman history, philosophy ).

He was from 1950 to 1964 worked at the Treasury. From 1964 to 1966 he was ( Assistant Secretary ) of the Cabinet Office and from 1967 to 1968 the Ministry of Finance (Treasury). From 1968 to 1970 he was Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Finance. From 1970 to 1975 he was State Secretary to the Head ( Head ) of the Home Civil Service. At the Home Office, he was from 1975 to 1977 Deputy Under Secretary. From 1977 to 1979, Armstrong Permanent Under Secretary. From 1979 to 1987 he was secretary of the cabinet of Margaret Thatcher.

From 1989 to 2000 Armstrong was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Biotechnology Investments Ltd. and from 1993 to 1997 at the Bristol and West Building Society, where he was director from 1988 to 1997 Non-Executive. For the Forensic Investigative Associates in London, he was from 1997 to 2003 Chairman ( Chairman ). From 1988 to 1997 he was a non-executive director of BAT Industries plc, during the same period even at NM Rothschild & Sons, where he was from 1997 to 2000 and consultant (Consultant ), and also from 1988 to 1997 at Rio Tinto and Shell transport and Trading plc. From 1988 to 1995 he was a non-executive director of Inchcape plc from 1989 to 1992 with the Lucas Industries plc from 1991 to 1995 Carlton Television Ltd, from 1995 to 2003 in the IAMGOLD Corp. Ltd. (Canada) and 1997-2001 at the Bank of Ireland, as well as the 3i Bioscience investment Trust pLC is changed from 2000 to 2002.

Since 2007, he serves on the Advisory Panel E -Clear (UK ) plc. From 1988 to 1998 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Trust Council (Board of Trustees ) of the V & A and from 1996 to 2005 by the Hestercombe Gardens Trust Ltd, and Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Board of Governors of the Royal Northern College of Music in 2000 to 2005. From 2001 to 2007 he was Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Leeds Castle Foundation and its trustee from 1987 to 2007. Since 2005 he has been Chairman ( Chairman ) of the Sir Edward Heath Charitable Foundation.

Membership in the House of Lords

Armstrong was appointed Life peer as Baron Armstrong of Ilminster, of Ashill in the County of Somerset on 26 February 1988. In the House of Lords he sits as a cross Bencher. The official introduction to the House of Lords took place on 15 March 1988 with the support of Martin Charteris, Baron Charteris of Amisfield and John Hunt, Baron Hunt of Tanworth. His inaugural address was delivered on 29 July 1988.

As subjects of political interest he calls on the website of the House of Lords, the arts, museums and galleries, as well as the civil service. As the state of interest he calls France. To him, the phrase " economical with the truth" (English: economic handling of the truth ) is attributed, which he used as part of the Spycatcher process in 1986. His predecessor as Cabinet Secretary Sir John Hunt, his successor in that office Sir Robin Butler. Armstrong is relatively irregularly present at meeting days.

Honors

Armstrong was in 1975 awarded the Royal Victorian Order in 1978 and was appointed a Knight Bachelor. In 1983 he became Knight ( Knight) of the Order of the Bath, after he had already become Knight Commander in 1978 and 1974 Companion. In 1983 he became Honorary Liveryman of the Salters' Company. From 1979 to 1994 he was a Fellow of Eton College. In the ChCh Oxford Armstrong in 1985 to honor student ( Honorary student) appointed. In the same year he became a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music and the following year an Honorary Bencher of the Law Society Inner Temple. From the University of Hull, he was honored with an honorary doctorate of Doctor of Laws ( Hon LLD) in 1994.

Family

Armstrong was married in first marriage with Serena Mary Benedicta Chance, daughter of Sir Roger James Ferguson Chance, 3rd Baronet and Mary Georgina Rowney. The marriage took place on 25 July 1953. From her two daughters were born. The divorce took place in 1985. Later that year, he married Mary Patricia Carlow, daughter of Charles Cyril Carlow.
