Robert Gavron, Baron Gavron

Robert Gavron, Baron Gavron, CBE (* September 13, 1930 ) is a British millionaire, politician and philanthropist.

Career

Bob Gavron is the son of Leah and Nathan Gavron. Gavron attended Leighton Park School in Reading and the St Peter 's College, Oxford. He became a lawyer ( barrister ) and was drawn by 1955 at the Middle Temple. In the same year he married his first wife, Hannah Fyvel († 1965).

He he founded the St Ives Group in 1964 and was its chairman from 1964 to 1993. He was 1975-87 Director of Octopus Publishing plc. and 1981-92 Electra Management plc. ; he was from 1983 Proprietor of The Carcanet Press Ltd.. and, from 1982 Chairman of the Folio Society. In the years 1996-98 he headed the National Gallery Co Ltd (initially under the name National Gallery Publications Ltd ) and from 1997 to 2000, the Guardian Media Group plc.

He was 1991-96 Chairman of the Open College of the Arts, 1992-98, a director of the Royal Opera House, from 1994 to 2001, a trustee of the National Gallery, 1997-2000, a trustee of the Scott Trust and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation of 1987-2005. He was governor from 1997 the London School of Economics and is the Chairman of his own charitable trusts. He was elected in 1996 an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.

Gavron and his second spouse, Nicky Gavron (born Nicolette Coates ), both of which are active in the Labour Party. Nicky Gavron was for many years Local Authority Councillor and then she was elected to the London Assembly. She was Deputy Mayor of London 2004-08. They were divorced in 1987 and he married in 1989 his third marriage Katharine Gardiner (born Macnair ).

Bob Gavron has the Labour Leader 's Office Fund financial support, which was managed by Lord Levy to support Tony Blair's private office before the British general election, 1997. Gavron was on August 6 1999als Baron Gavron of Highgate in the Borough of Camden a Life Peer. His daughter is the film director Sarah Gavron and actor Rafi Gavron is one of his grandsons.
