Robert I, Count of Dreux

Robert I., called the Great (le Grand) (* probably in 1123, † October 11, 1188 probably in Braine -sur -Vesle ) was the fifth son of the French King Louis VI. and Adelheid of Savoy.

Life

Well in the year of his birth he was given dominion over Savigny, 1132, he was the appanage of his father, the county Dreux. Through his marriages, he succeeded in his possession to increase significantly.

1139/41 he married his first wife Agnès de Garlande ( probably * 1122, † 1143 ), daughter of Anseau de Garlande, Count of Rochefort, and NN de Montlhery.

He completed his second marriage to 1144 Havise of Évreux ( probably * 1118, † 1152 ), daughter of Walter of Évreux ( Gautier d' Evreux ), Earl of Salisbury, and Sibylle de Chanort and widow of Rotrou III. Count of Perche.

Robert assisted his brother, King Louis VII, 1143 in the fight against Count Theobald II of Champagne. He conquered among other Reims and Châlons. In 1147 he accompanied - as many other French nobles also - his brother on the Second Crusade in 1148 and fought at the siege of Damascus. Robert broke the crusade even before his brother and returned from several weeks in front of him in the homeland. Believing that they can take advantage of the mood after the failed crusade, he tried to realize their own ambitions to the throne. He was however hampered by the regent Suger of Saint- Denis, Archbishop Samson of Reims, Count Rudolf of Vermandois, until finally the arrival of the king brought these plans to case.

The end of 1152 he married his third wife Agnes de Baudement ( probably * 1130, † between 1202 and July 11, 1218 ), Countess of Braine, Lady ( Lady ) of Fere -en- Tardenois, Pontarcy, Nesles, Longueville and Quincy, daughter and heiress of Guido (Guy ) of Baudement, Count of Braine, and Alix, widow of Milo II of bar-sur -Seine, founder of the Abbey of Saint- Yved ( Braine ). By this marriage he came into the possession of the goods of his wife.

In 1159 he gave the city its Dreux Communal Constitution. He is also the founder of the city of Brie -Comte- Robert, which now bears his name. In 1187 he founded the church of Saint -Thomas, which was built next to the castle of the Louvre.
