Life

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop on 8 May 1990 in New Orleans and Titular Bishop of Mactaris. The Archbishop of New Orleans, Francis Bible Schulte, donated to him on June 29th of the same year, the episcopal ordination; Philip Matthew Hannan were co-consecrators, Archbishop Emeritus of New Orleans, and John Clement Favalora, Bishop of Saint Petersburg. As a motto he chose Jesus Must Increase.

On January 5, 1996, he was appointed Bishop of Covington and introduced into the office on March 19 of the same year. On 15 December 2001, he was appointed Bishop of Baton Rouge and introduced into the office on March 14 of next year.
