Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Antananarivo

The Archdiocese of Antananarivo (Latin: Archidioecesis Antananarivensis ) is a location in Madagascar Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Antananarivo.

History

The Archdiocese of Antananarivo was opened in 1841 by Pope Gregory XVI. cessions of territory from the Apostolic Prefecture Bourbon established as Apostolic Prefecture of Madagascar. The Apostolic Prefecture of Madagascar announced on September 4, 1848 from parts of their territory establishing the Apostolic Mayotte, Nosy Be Prefecture and Comoros.

1848, the Apostolic Prefecture of Madagascar was by Pope Pius IX. elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate. The Apostolic Vicariate of Madagascar announced on January 16, 1896 from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Vicariate northern Madagascar and southern Madagascar. 1898, the Apostolic Vicariate of Madagascar was renamed as Apostolic Vicariate of Central Madagascar. On 10 May 1913, the Apostolic Vicariate of Central Madagascar were parts of its territory from establishing the Apostolic Vicariate of Fianarantsoa. A further transfer of territory took place on May 15, 1913 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Betafo. The Apostolic Vicariate of Central Madagascar Tananarive was renamed in apostolic vicariate on 20 May 1913. On June 18, 1935, the Apostolic Vicariate of Tananarive were from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Vatomandry. A further transfer of territory took place on January 8, 1938 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Morondava.

On September 14, 1955, the Apostolic Vicariate of Tananarive was by Pope Pius XII. raised to an archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Tananarive announced on 21 May 1959 from parts of its territory to the foundation of the diocese Ambatondrazaka. On October 28, 1989, the Archdiocese of Tananarive was renamed the Archdiocese of Antananarivo.

Since 1969, all archbishops of Antananarivo were created cardinals, so Antananarivo is considered traditionally associated with the cardinal bishopric.
