Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bangui

The Archdiocese of Bangui (Latin Archidioecesis Banguensis ) is a Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Bangui in the Central African Republic. It includes the prefecture Ombella - Mpoko.

History

Pope Pius X founded the Apostolic Oubangui Chari Prefecture on 8 May 1909 from the Vicariate Apostolic of territory of the Upper French Congo. With the Apostolic Constitution Si christiana res it was raised on December 2, 1937 Apostolic Vicariate.

On 28 May 1940, took the name Apostolic Vicariate of Bangui. With the bull Dum Tantis it was collected on September 14, 1955 in the rank of Metropolitanerzbistums.

Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:

  • May 28, 1940 at the Apostolic Prefecture Berbérati;
  • June 14, 1954 at the Apostolic Prefecture Bangassou;
  • December 18, 1965 to the bishopric of Bambari;
  • June 10, 1995 to the diocese Mbaiki;
  • June 28, 1997 to the bishopric of Kaga - Bandoro.
