Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Beijing

The Archdiocese of Beijing (Latin Archidioecesis Pechimensis ) is a located in the People's Republic of China Roman Catholic diocese.

History

Already in 1307 is demonstrated in Beijing an archbishopric. (see Yuan Dynasty ). On April 10, 1690 Diocese with the Bull Romani Pontificis by Alexander VIII was re- established in Beijing from the Vicariate Apostolic of Nanking, but changed its name on May 30, 1856 Vicariate Apostolic of Northern Chi - Li and on December 3, 1924 back before it was brought on April 11, 1946 under the name of Peking to the archbishopric. The Archdiocese counted 1949 215.915 Catholics. It was a mission field of Vincentians who presented the Apostolic Vicars also until 1946.

Due to the political situation, the archbishopric was after the death of Cardinal Thomas Tien Ken -sin in 1967, the only one recognized by the Roman Catholic Church Archbishop, until today no longer be filled. However, further archbishops were of the Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association used as in 2007 Joseph Li Shan ( but was the consecration of the latter subsequently recognized by the Holy See ).

Major churches

  • Xishiku Church ( " Northern Cathedral " )

The church, built in neo-Gothic style, is located in Beijing's Xicheng district town and is the largest Roman Catholic church in Beijing. It offers about 1,000 people space.

It is the cathedral of the Archdiocese and the Archbishop 's seat.
