Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Lilongwe

The Archdiocese of Lilongwe (Latin: Archidioecesis Lilongvensis ) is a location in Malawi Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Lilongwe.

History

The Archdiocese of Lilongwe was on July 31, 1889 by Pope Leo XIII. from the Apostolic Vicariate of territory Tanganyika built as a Prefecture Apostolic of Nyassa.

The Apostolic Prefecture Nyassa was born on February 12, 1897 by Leo XIII. elevated to the Apostolic Vicariate. On 3 December 1903, the Apostolic Vicariate of Nyassa gave parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Shire. Other annexations took place on January 28, 1913 establishing the Apostolic Vicariate Bangueolo, on 1 July 1937 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Fort Jameson and 8 May 1947 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Northern Nyassa. On 12 July 1951, the Apostolic Vicariate of Nyassa was renamed Vicariate Apostolic Likuni. The Apostolic Vicariate of Likuni announced on April 29, 1956 from parts of its territory to the creation of the Vicariate Apostolic of Dedza. On 20 June 1958, the Apostolic Vicariate Likuni was renamed Vicariate Apostolic Lilongwe.

On April 25, 1959, the Apostolic Vicariate of Lilongwe was by Pope John XXIII. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Cum christiana fides to the diocese and the Archdiocese of Blantyre is a suffragan. The Diocese of Lilongwe was on 9 February 2011 by Pope Benedict XVI. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Quotiescumque to an archbishopric.
