Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Montevideo

The Archdiocese of Montevideo (Latin: Archidioecesis Montisvidei ) is a Roman Catholic archdiocese in Uruguay, based in Montevideo. Archbishop of the archdiocese is Daniel Fernando Sturla Berhouet.

History

The Archdiocese of Montevideo was built in 1830 as the Apostolic Vicariate. For the Diocese of the Archdiocese was raised on 13 July 1878. The newly established diocese was reduced in its territorial Bistumgsgeschichte. This led to the April 14, 1897 to a reestablishment of the dioceses of Melo and Salto. At the same time the Diocese of Montevideo was raised to an archbishopric. The diocese territory of the Archdiocese and the Diocese of Melo were last divided on 15 November 1995. This led to the establishment of the Diocese of San José de Mayo.
