Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Cristóbal de la Habana

The Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana (Latin: Archidioecesis Avanensis ) is a community on Cuba Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Havana.

History

The Archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana was posted on September 10, 1787 by Pope Pius VI. out of territory of the Diocese of Santiago de Cuba erected as Diocese of San Cristobal de la Habana. It was the Archdiocese of Santo Domingo is a suffragan. On April 25, 1793, the diocese was part of its territory from the foundation of the Diocese of Louisiana and two in Florida. Other annexations took place on February 20, 1903 establishing the dioceses Pinar del Río and Cienfuegos. The Diocese of San Cristobal de la Habana was on December 10, 1912 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Matanzas.

The Diocese of San Cristobal de la Habana was posted on January 6, 1925 by Pope Pius XI. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Inter praecipuas to an archbishopric.

The Archdiocese has been awarded the 2011 opened Félix Varela Cultural Centre ( Centro Cultural Padre Félix Varela ), one also lay open ecclesiastical study center based in Old Havana. A prominent project of the cultural center is the quarterly magazine Espacio Laical, the themes of social renewal is dedicated to, it also picks up political debate with different points of view, but in contrast to the other published in Cuba media not subject to the censorship of the Communist Party of Cuba.
