Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna (Latin: Archidioecesis Viennensis immersive Vindobonensis ) is located in northeastern Austria. Since September 14, 1995, it is headed by Archbishop Christoph Schönborn, who is also a Cardinal since 1998.

History

Originally the territory of the present archdiocese was subordinate to the Diocese of Passau, founded in 739, some parishes in the south of Lower Austria belonged to the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The efforts of Leopold VI. , To establish its own diocese in Vienna at the beginning of the 13th century, failed due to the intervention of the Bishop of Passau.

Duke Rudolf IV began to expand the St. Stephen's Church to a Gothic cathedral. In 1358 he built the Chapel of All Saints in the Hofburg a collegiate, which relocated in 1365 to the Church of St. Stephen; 1469, this pin was created using the collection to the diocese of a cathedral chapter.

Only the Habsburgs under Emperor Friedrich III. succeeded in 1469 in obtaining from Pope Paul II in the papal bull supramae dignitatis specula that the bishoprics of Vienna and Wiener Neustadt built in Austria. This bull also the Roman Emperor and his successors were given the right to use the bishops, a right which is exercised by the Austrian emperor until 1918.

The diocese included only the urban area of Vienna and handed in the south to Mödling. The first bishop Leo of Spaur has his office probably never exercised. Because the diocese was considered poor, it was administered to 1513 only by administrators. Only George Slatkonia actually resided in Vienna.

In the following years the church life was weakened by the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529 and the spread of Protestantism. Especially the hl. Peter Canisius ( administrator 1554-1555 ) and Cardinal Melchior Klesl ( Bishop of 1598-1630 ) promoted the Counter-Reformation.

1631 Ferdinand II gave to Bishop Anton Wolfradt and all successors to the imperial prince title she led as Archbishop of Vienna until 1918.

Under the episcopate of Sigismund Graf von Kollonitz Vienna on June 1, 1722 by Pope Innocent XIII. with the Bull Suprema dispositione elevated to the rank of archdiocese. But the bull was brought to Vienna only on 14 February 1723. The Diocese of Wiener Neustadt was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Vienna. From the Diocese of Passau in 1729, the district came under the Vienna Woods ( with the parishes between Vienna and Wiener Neustadt) to the new archdiocese.

Emperor Joseph II forced the diocese of Passau with an agreement dated August 4, 1784 to surrender their parishes in Lower Austria. This came under Bishop Christoph Anton Graf Migazzi the district under the Manhart mountain ( with the parishes north of Vienna ), 5 parishes in the Diocese of Raab (Győr ) in Hungary and the diocese in 1785 resolved Wiener Neustadt to the diocesan territory. The newly established diocese of Linz and St. Pölten Vienna were assumed as suffragan sees.

On September 2, 1937, lying in the parishes of Czechoslovakia came to Feldberg ( Czech Valtice ) to the Diocese of Brno.

From 1922 to 1949, the archbishops of Vienna were also Apostolic Administrator of Burgenland. Built in 1960, the Diocese of Eisenstadt was also suffragan of Vienna.
