Roman Catholic Diocese of Ondo

The Diocese of Ondo (Latin: Dioecesis Ondoensis ) is a location in Nigeria Roman Catholic diocese based in Akure.

History

Pope Pius XII. founded the Apostolic Vicariate of Ondo - Ilorin on January 12, 1943 annexations of the Apostolic Vicariate of Benin Coast.

With the Apostolic Constitution Laeto accepimus it was raised on 18 April 1950 in the rank of diocese, which was the Archdiocese of Lagos assumed as suffragan and assumed its present name. On March 26, 1994, was part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Ibadan.

Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:

  • January 20, 1960 at the Apostolic Prefecture of Ilorin;
  • July 30, 1972 to the bishopric of Ado - Ekiti.
