Royal Dramatic Theatre

The Royal Dramatic Theatre (Swedish Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern, in the more common name Dramatan ) is the Swedish National Theatre in Stockholm. In the eight stages of the house are given annually by the thousand performances.

The theater is located since 1908 at the Nybroplan, Stockholm. Decorated in Art Nouveau style building was designed by Swedish architect Fredrik Lilljekvist. At the ornate design of the theater appeared with renowned artists like Carl Milles and Carl Larsson.

From the in-house drama school drama Tens elevskola many famous actors were born.

History

Founded in 1788 Gustav III, King of Sweden, the Royal Dramatic Theatre as a spin-off from the existing Royal Theatre ( Kungliga Teatern ); in the latter alongside dramatic spectacles and operas were performed. Since this cleavage, the newly founded Royal Dramatic Theatre was the venue without exception of spoken drama. The Royal Theatre, however, remained as pure Opera House Royal Opera House since 1997 and there are means ( Kungliga operands ); it is Sweden's national opera.

By 1907, the National Theatre was located in a building from 1788 opposite the Opera House on Kungsträdgården, a well-known park in Stockholm. In the 19th century many famous plays were staged at the Royal Dramatic Theatre, including premieres of works by Henrik Ibsen and Anton Chekhov, as well as some works by August Strindberg (eg: Till Damascus ).

At the beginning of the 20th century resulted in the problems of the Royal Dramatic Theatre to an intensive discussion of a renovation. Firstly, the stages were considered old and out of fashion, the entire facility adhered to an old-fashioned feel to the other in Stockholm several competing theater had been established, which was to the fore the deficits of the National Theatre, and finally also had economic consequences. Various proposals have been put forward recommendations aimed at a restoration of the building or a new building on the Kungsträdgården, but none was able to convince the then King Oscar II. Instead, he had the building torn down to build it again in a better place at Nybroplan, a place in the newly formed heart of Stockholm.

The architect Fredrik Lilljekvist was responsible for the new building, which was inaugurated on February 18 1908 August Strindberg's play fattening Olof and is abbreviated as Dramatan. It was from here the most important influence of the Swedish theater of the 20th century. Major directors such as Olof Gustaf Molander and Alf Sjöberg and Ingmar Bergman worked here.

The rich ornamental ornate facade of the building has been made ​​of the bright dolomitic Ekeberg marble ( at Glanshammar ). Influenced by the style of the Vienna Secession facade structure with numerous anklingenden to Art Nouveau ornaments is one of the few in northern Europe that was created out of marble.
