Royal Institute of Technology

The Royal Institute of Technology ( Kungliga Tekniska Swedish högskolan, short KTH, English name KTH Royal Institute of Technology) is a university in Stockholm and Sweden's largest technical university. One-third of all Swedish engineers are trained at KTH. In addition to the main campus on the northern edge of the city center, there are other campus in Kista, Haninge and Södertälje.

History

Predecessor of KTH was the laboratory mechanicum, which was founded on 26 October 1696 Christopher Polhem. Since the training performance was not satisfactory, in 1798 a " mechanical school" with three teachers was established, which was to train inter alia, in statics, mechanics and hydraulics. In view of the rapid industrialization in Germany and Austria was this solution is not permanent, so that King Karl XIV Johan on May 18, 1825, the creation of a " Technological Institutet " decided. On June 8, 1826 King laid down in the statutes that the Institute " is intended to provide skills and knowledge that are required for successful operation of craft and factories." In 1827 the KTH participated as Teknologiska Institutet operation on and had a very strong practical relevance. So should the demand for engineers, which was created by industrialization, are covered. The focus was therefore less reliant on the scientific principles than on the technology used. But right from the beginning, it was this focus is not without controversy. In 1877 it was renamed the Kungliga Tekniska högskolan and the training was more scientific. In 1927, then they have been recognized as a university and the awarding of the doctoral law.

PDC

On the university campus, the most powerful scientific computer in Sweden is operated, the PDC ( parallelldatorcentrum ). Its services are used by both research groups at the University as well as external services.
