Rupt-sur-Saône

Rupt -sur -Saône is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Rupt -sur -Saône is located at an altitude of 207 m above sea level, 4 km south-west of Scey -sur -Saône -et -Saint -Albin and about 16 km west of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the central part of the department, on the northern edge of the Saônetals opposite Chantes, at the entrance of the creek Rupt de Vaux in the broad valley, on the southern edge of the forest heights of the Bois de Confracourt.

The area of ​​10.24 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the middle Saône Valley. The southern boundary runs mostly along the Saone, which flows here with large loops through a wide Alluvialniederung to the southwest. The flood plain is on average 202 m and has a width of about two kilometers wide. The river is expanded to the waterway, the loops are cut through side channels.

From the river, the municipality's area extends northward over the flood plain and a 30 m high steep slope on the adjacent plateau. This plateau consists of an alternation of calcareous and sandy- marly sediments of the upper Jurassic period. It is divided by the valley section of Rupt de Vaux and his Seitentälchen. The fertile soils of the valley and the plateau are mainly used for agricultural purposes. Further north, the municipality of ground enough in a wooded area. With 341 m is reached on a hill in the Bois du Prince de Bauffremont the highest elevation of Rupt -sur -Saône.

Neighboring communities of Rupt -sur -Saône are Scey -sur -Saône -et -Saint -Albin in the north, Ovanches in the east, and Chantes Fédry in the south and Vy- lès- Rupt and Confracourt in the West.

History

Several findings indicate that the municipality of Rupt -sur -Saône was already inhabited in Gallo- Roman times. In the Middle Ages Rupt belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local government had held since the 12th century, the lords of Pesmes, who built here a seat of power. At the beginning of the 13th century, the ruling here noble family took the name Rupt. Together with the Franche -Comté Rupt came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Until his death at the guillotine in 1793 was Rupt in the possession of Louis Marie Florent de Lomont d' Haraucourt, duc du Châtelet. To avoid confusion with other communities of the same name, Rupt 1878 was officially renamed Rupt -sur -Saône. Today Rupt -sur -Saône is a member of the 22 localities comprehensive community association Communauté de communes des Combes.

Attractions

The village church was built in the 18th century and has a rich interior. Outside the church is a Calvary. Nearby stands the mausoleum of Count d'Orsay, who was owner of the castle. A crossroads is dated to the year 1603. Also worth seeing is the Fontaine au Lion with a large lion statue. On the hill west of the village, the castle, which was built on the site of the medieval manor house in the 19th century rises. From the former building of the mighty round keep from the 12th century and a building from the 16th century are preserved.

Population

With 119 inhabitants ( 2004) Rupt -sur -Saône is one of the smallest municipalities in the department of Haute- Saône. After the population had declined significantly during the 20th century (1881 440 persons were still counted ), only small fluctuations were recorded since the early 1990s.

Economy and infrastructure

Rupt -sur -Saône was well into the 20th century, a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. The water power of the village Bach was formerly used for the operation of several mills. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road that leads from Soing after Scey -sur -Saône -et -Saint -Albin. Further road links exist with Chantes and Ovanches.
