Russell Jacquet

Russell Jacquet ( born December 4, 1917 in St. Martinville, Louisiana; † 28 February 1990 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American jazz trumpeter and singer.

Life

Russell Jacquet was the older brother of tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet, with whom he worked several times in the course of his career. Jacquet first played in the bands of Ray Floyd and Milt Larkin, before he began studying music at Wiley College and Texas Southern University. He then worked for 1945/47 in his brother's band, then founded his own formation, which was from 1945 to 1949 the house band at New York's Cotton Club, and finally returned to Illinois Jacquet's band back. Later he played with various bands in Oakland and Houston with Arnett Cobb and several more times with his brother.

Although he own record label ( Town Hall ) operating in the 1970s, he took over his career only a few titles on under his own name. He led in the 1940s some sessions for the label Globe, Modern Music, Jewel, sensation and King; among other things, he played in these recordings from 1945 to 1949 with Sweets Edison, Teddy Edwards, Dexter Gordon, Chico Hamilton, JJ Johnson, Charles Mingus, Joe Newman, Leo Parker, Sonny Stitt, Sir Charles Thompson, Lucky Thompson, Gerry Wiggins, Shadow Wilson, Gerald Wilson and Snooky Young.
