Ruth Cardoso

Ruth Correia Leite Cardoso Vilaça ( born September 19, 1930 in Araraquara, São Paulo, † June 24, 2008 in São Paulo) was a Brazilian anthropologist and former First Lady of Brazil.

Life

In 1953 she married Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who later became president of Brazil. With him she has three children.

She worked as a lecturer and researcher at the University of São Paulo and at various other universities in different countries.

She was an associate member of the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge, Facultad de Ciencias Sociales Latinoamericana, University of Chile (Santiago), Maison des Sciences de l' Homme (Paris), University of California (Berkeley, (California ) and Columbia University (New York City).

She died in June 24, 2008 due to heart problems.
